According to many people, the window air conditioners are perhaps the most admired and preferable. They come in so many models that they can be easily fitted into a regular sized window designed according to different rooms. If you want to cool your whole home then definitely the central air conditioner would be a better option, but if you are staying in a small house and you need to cool one or two rooms, then the window air conditioner would be the best for you. The decision is yours. As I mentioned earlier, that there are a large variety of different air conditioners in the market, so spend sensibly. Of course, the more you spend the best air conditioner of superior feature and effective appliance you can buy. The vital thought behind inventing an air conditioner is very simple. It performs its job magically, with a simple principle leaving wonders for the users. Air conditioners are extensively used in hospitals also because they generate hygienic, harmless and non-allergic environment in the hospitals. People suffering from asthma, sensitivity or any other physical condition can gain from the air conditioners as they have a helpful result on their fitness. Sometimes in summers during the high temperatures, air conditioners can save the lives of aged people. And this has been proved to a big point. Well maintained air conditioning devices have no side effects on the poor health of human beings. There are no disadvantages of using air conditioners. As some air conditioners are costly, there fore you should decide which one to buy according to your home environment, as this electrical device lasts for 10-15 years. Think wisely and spend. Charles Lazarus, founder of US-based toy retail giant Toys ‘R’ Us, dies at 94

Saturday, March 24, 2018

On Thursday, Charles Lazarus, the founder of United States toy retailer Toys “R” Us, died in Manhattan, New York, New York of respiratory failure. He was 94. His death came a week after Toys “R” Us announced that all of the stores were closing.

Toys “R” Us issued a statement in which they said, “There have been many sad moments for Toys “R” Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus. He visited us in New Jersey just last year and we will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and loved ones.”

Michael Goldstein, who was a close friend and former Toys “R” Us chairman, said: “He was the father of the toy business. He knew the toys and loved the toys and loved the kids who would shop in the stores. His face lit up when he watched kids playing with toys.” In a phone interview Goldstein said that Charles Lazarus died in Manhattan.

Lazarus no longer held a stake in the chain, CNN reported. Lazarus took over his father’s bicycle repair shop in 1948 at the age of 25 and changed it to baby furniture. He opened the first Toys “R” Us store in 1957. Lazarus had remained its CEO until 1994.

Colombian military spy plane crashes

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

According to media reports, a Colombian air force AC-47 (registration FAC1670) spy plane carrying five people has crashed near the Colombian city of La Dorada, in the department of Caldas.

All on board the plane are believed to have been killed, according to Colombia Reports. Among the dead, according to Monsters and Critics, are two technicians, a major and two second lieutenants. ABS-CBN News reports that the dead included three high ranking officials and two lower ranking ones.

Jorge Ballesteros, a Colombian air force official, says that the plane took off from an air force base in the city of Puerto Salgar and was on an exercise mission when it crashed. He also states that although it was on a training exercise, the plane was carrying bombs and machine guns.

A military team has been dispatched to the area to investigate the incident, but they have already put the blame on mechanical failure. Ballestero noted that investigators have ruled out a rebel attack and terrorism as possible causes.

AC-47’s have been used by the Colombian air force for nearly 20 years, most of which were donated from the United States. They were provided to the country in an attempt to fight the illegal drug market and to defend citizens and the military against rebel attacks. They are also used to gather intelligence and come equipped with a state-of-the-art communications system, radar and infrared detection systems.

Free Software Foundation releases first draft of GPLv3

Monday, January 16, 2006

The Free Software Foundation released the first draft for the next version of the GNU General Public License at the International Public Conference for GPLv3 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, today. The revisions mark the first changes to the GPL since the second version was released in 1991.

According to Richard M. Stallman, the president of the Free Software Foundation, the most significant change to the license are changes to allow GPLv3 to be compatible with other popular free software licenses, notably the Apache Software License 2.0 and the Eclipse license. A second significant change, according to Stallman, is the addition of a clause prohibiting the use of GPL software for Digital rights management (DRM), “something for which there can never be toleration.”

As of noon EST today, the license is available in draft form on the Free Software Foundation’s website. The conference about the license, which continues now and into Tuesday, is being held in Building 10, Room 250, on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Approximately 200 people attended the morning session of the conference, during which Eben Moglen gave what he called a “quick” 90 minute overview of the license changes.

While Moglen’s presentation covered a great deal of legal detail, it was not without levity. When the cell phone of Dave Turner, an FSF staff member sitting in the front row, rang during Moglen’s speech, Stallman broke in, requesting of the audience, “If you have brought in a portable tracking and surveillance device, you should turn it off,” before making other remarks about the police.

The crowd at the conference included a large number of free software celebrities, including Bruce Perens, Andrew Tridgell, and Chris diBona. According to Wikinews reporter Brandon Stafford, it seemed that IBM and Sun were the corporations with the most employees present. Representing the companies were Bob Sutor, Craig Cook, and Mark Brown from IBM and Simon Phipps and Doug Johnson from Sun. Also in attendance were representatives from Intel, Redhat, MySQL AB, Hitachi, and Qualcomm, among others.

Whether you are a small or large company that has just started you need a web page and you can use Web Design In Essex to create one. When you start looking into the various web page designs available you may not know where to begin. You can of course hire a designer who can do one of two things. The first is to create a brand new website for you from scratch. The second is to use a template that is sold for either a regular monthly fee or a one-time fee. The former will cost you much more than the latter but of course you have more diversity with a customized web design and the ability to make your website a live version of what you see in your head instead of conforming to what is available.

When you hire professional contractors to create your custom website you want to ask for an estimate before you begin. You can get an estimate based on what you want done and whether or not the company that designs your website is also providing you with web hosting services. Once your website is designed you have to pay to have it live on the internet. This is called web hosting. Some companies offer web hosting alongside their website design. You can often use a template website and pay for your monthly web hosting fees or you can turn to an individual or freelance designer to create the page for less and then pay the minimal monthly hosting fees.

Web design freelancers can be found online with a generic search. You can find an individual or a small team of web designers that can walk you through the steps they will take in creating your unique website and the estimated time it will take to complete it. If you are on a tight budget you may opt to save money by selecting a newer company that does not have a diverse portfolio yet. In these cases you can often get a reduced price in exchange for allowing them to showcase your website to potential customers as proof of their creations. If you are on a tight timeframe though and you want a website created quickly you may need to hire a small company that has multiple employees who can work on the same website. This may work out faster but may cost you more money in the end.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro injured in Preakness, does not finish race

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, sent as the post-time odds-on favorite in this year’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, breaks down in the opening stretch of the race, shattering any chance of a Triple Crown winner this year. Bernardini, the 12-1 4th choice out of 9, ends up winning this year’s Preakness, stopping the clock at 1:54.65. Following up 5 1/4 lengths behind was Sweetnorthernsaint, sent to the post at 8-1, and Hemingway’s Key at 29-1, six lengths further back.

According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Barbaro’s injury was “significant” and “would require major stabilizing surgery.” Barbaro’s injury effectively ended the horse’s racing career.

Bernardini, a colt by A.P. Indy out of Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American, was bred and is owned by the Darley Stable of Sheikh Mohammed, is trained by Tom Albertrani, and was ridden to victory by Javier Castellano. Today’s Preakness marks the first Preakness win for jockey Javier Castellano, who previously rode Ghostzapper to a win in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Preakness was only Bernardini’s 4th career start.

Bernardini paid $27.80 on a $2 win bet. The $2 Exacta of Bernardini and Sweetnorthernsaint (8-7) paid $171.60, the $1 Trifecta with Hemingway’s Key in third (8-7-3) paid $1,956.40, and the $1 Superfecta with 2nd-favorite Brother Derek (8-7-3-6) paid $11,151.20.

Mongolia’s ex-communists ahead going into Sunday’s election

Sunday, May 22, 2005

“Communism was much better,” said Tsahiriin Daariimaa Saturday on the eve of Mongolia‘s presidential elections. Polls predict that many Mongolians plan to vote for their former communist rulers — the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

Under communism, “everyone worked for the collective farm,” Daariimaa said. None of her children has a steady job these days.

Myatav Choijav is a Mongolian who shares that view; “Now, some people are very rich and some are very poor. In the old times, the government took better care of us ordinary people,” Choijav said. “Now, the government is very far away from us, especially if you live in the countryside and take care of sheep. Everyone was equal under communist rule,” Choijav said.

Tseveenjav, a 70-year-old sheep herder, agrees: “I will support the MPRP. They always do the right thing.”

Tseveenjav wears the traditional Mongolian thick boots and hat while sitting upon his horse with a dead marmot hung from his saddle. Falcon and Tiger, his sheepdogs, help him keep watch over 500 sheep.

Sambuu Ganbaator, a member of the Democratic Party, has a different opinion from most of his neighbors.

“Too many people forget what the MPRP did to Mongolia,” he said. “They kept Mongolia under a brutal dictatorship. You weren’t allowed to speak your mind.” Now, he said, “you can say anything you want to say and do what you want to live a happy life.”

The MPRP’s candidate, Nambariin Enkbayar, leads the polls and the ex-communist party has said that it is now committed to democracy.

2007 Taipei IT Month exposed problems on traffic jams

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Although the 2007 Taipei IT Month closed last Sunday (December 9), it attracted more than 750,000 people to visit the show, but it exposed some problems especially on the traffic factor.

Generally on weekdays (December 3-7), the traffic jam at Shi-fu Road often took place in the afternoon as many schools visited the show and several sightseeing buses sometimes parked there for patronages on students. In comparison with Sung-shou Road, Shi-fu Road was sometimes obstructed but not as serious than on weekends because the official shuttle buses played a key role on transportation.

On the opposite way of two weekends (December 1, 2, 8, and 9), it exposed traffic problems as many people visited the show, even though the Traffic Division of Taipei City Police Department set medians around the Taipei World Trade Center and the Taipei 101, and it apparently decreased violations on illegal crossing, Shi-fu Road and Sung-shou Road were still trapped in traffic jams than on weekdays.

Before the launch of the TWTC Nangang in March 2008, governments and show organizers will focus on the traffic issue at the Taipei World Trade Center during the construction of the MRT Taipei World Trade Center Station.

Understanding Exercise Misconceptions

Fitness and exercise are gaining popularity over the past decades for many reasons. People engage in these activities to improve their circulatory, respiratory, and immune system. Others exercise to eliminate stress and anxiety from their busy lives. Regardless of the reasons, many people are seriously working put and are gaining minimal results. This happens because of misconceptions about exercise are some reasons that prevent many individuals from getting in shape. Understanding these misconceptions are essential in achieving one’s desired results.

Many individuals think that going to the gym and spending excess time is a great way to develop results fast. People who want to improve their health should bear in mind that there are no short cuts in physical fitness. Too much training may hinder muscle growth rather than develop them. In working out, the resting phase is as important as the training period. Too much training may lead to fatigue and cause more harm than good. Over-training in men may temporarily reduce sperm count and quality. This happens because the body literally kills itself during work outs. To build muscles and improve the body, the body needs to rest to attain normal cell development. Too much physical activity may reduce the level of hormones in the blood stream that affects sperm production. The good news is, the sperm levels may return to normal levels after three days.

Another misconception that is believed by many is, the latest gym equipments should be used to achieve desirable results. There are different kinds of contraptions designed for workout out in the market, telling what can be achieved by using them can be difficult. Many health and fitness specialists believe that exercise buffs do not need to use expensive equipments to achieve health improvements. Equipments like dumbbells are capable of enhancing overall health and well-being. Many exercises with dumbbells are beneficial in preventing plateaus from occurring, a period when one’s weight doesn’t change. Some plateaus last for weeks while others for months. Using dumbbells can give effective and affordable workout in the privacy of one’s home. In addition there are also many cheap fitness accessories that are easy to use like fitness balls and resistance bands. Consult health professionals to know exercises that can be done with these accessories.

Working out oftentimes doesn’t require the use equipments, anaerobic exercises like push-ups, pull-overs, and pull-backs are typically performed to develop power and tone the muscles. Some health studies claim that these anaerobic exercises should be done in repetitions of 100 for maximum development.

Plyometric training is another way of developing speed and power without the use of weights and other equipments. This kind of training seeks to improve the reaction of individuals through vigorous muscle contraction because fast extraordinary contractions. Examples of lower body plyometric exercises are: standing jumps, tuck jumps, split jumps and long jumps. Upper body plyometric exercises may include press and hand claps. Another method for developing one’s upper body may be done with the use of a medicine ball. A partner drops a medicine ball towards the chest of another person who catches the ball and throws it back This method is considered a high intensity exercise and should only be done after basic conditioning.

Individuals who decide to include a regular program of physical activity are encouraged to consult doctors and other health professionals for exercise advice. This is important because a lot of individuals tend to workout too much, improperly, and use the inappropriate equipments. Understanding proper workout and including a healthy diet in one’s lifestyle may lead to improved health and overall well-being.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.
