What is the Met Opera?

The Met Opera was founded back in 1880 to offer an alternative to the Academy of Music opera house. The first show was held in 1883 in the Old Met building on 39th and Broadway. It moved to the new Lincoln Centre in 1966 and started showing every evening Monday to Saturday as well as a matinee performance on Saturdays.

One of the big draws at the Met Opera is the show offerings, sure to satisfy all tastes. The 2015-16 season, for example, was made up of 227 performances of 25 different operas. These ranged from 18th century Baroque to 19th century Bel canto and right through to modern late 20th century productions. Their shows vary from those offering traditional dcor and approaches to the very latest in contemporary conceptual design. So, whether you love the classics or something modern, there is always a suitable show just around the corner. And what more perfect way to attend than with our limousine service in NYC!

Their holiday program for 2017-18 is an impressive one with a range of classics available. Verdis Requiem is a perfect example of a classic production and is being shown this winter after a nine-year gap. The production is based on the Requiem Mass that Verdi created for a friend whose funeral he could not bring himself to attend and is a recognizable and powerful piece.

The Magic Flute is an adaptation of Mozarts piece of the same name and has been given a modern twist that includes giant flamingos and dancing bears. It has also been recreated in English and is just 100 minutes in length, making it an excellent family event if you are visiting NYC with children.

Another Mozart piece available to see is Le Nozze di Figaro. This performance is a follow up of sorts that include the cast of characters from the Barber of Seville and is set over just a single day with Figaro and Susannah preparing to be married. The show is full of impulsive acts, outrageous behavior and many attempts to ruin the couples future happiness.
