Many folks who invest in a home theater do not consider how important the sound system is to getting the most enjoyment out of your set up. I think we would all agree that the television is the most important component but a good home theater sound system can do wonders as well.
There are many different ways you can set up your sound system from just a receiver with a couple of speakers all the way up to a full surround sound system. What you choose will depend on your requirements and budget.
Even with all of the modern technology in the newer televisions, the one drawback of any TV is the built in speakers. I have yet to hear television speakers that are anyway near the sound quality of just a decent set of speakers being run through a receiver. This can affect your movie watching experience as having good sound quality makes the movie experience much more realistic.
Most people will purchase a surround sound stereo system which includes front speakers, rear speakers, and a subwoofer. The rear speakers are what really makes this a “surround system” because the viewer is being surrounded with sound. These systems can range in price dramatically depending on quality and the old adage that you get what you pay for is true in this case.
If you are looking to save a little money and still get good results, I would suggest a decent audio receiver and a set of speakers. Simply hook youtr dvd player audio cable through your receiver and you will be amazed at the results. Many receivers will also have settings that will optimize the sound output for movies.
An even cheaper solution is to just hook your TV into a amplifier which will power the speakers or just hook some speakers up directly to the TV. This will not have the sound quality of using a nice audio reciever but it is not bad. Whatever set up you ultimately choose to utilize will be much better than your TV speakers.
